Our newest inductee to the League of Extraordinary Lesbians is Nitza Quiñones Alejandro.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Senate confirmed her appointment as the first openly lesbian Latina federal judge.
Nitza earned her law degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 1975, and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with honors, also from the University of Puerto Rico. Prior to this historic appointment she presided over the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas, where she was the first Hispanic woman to be elected in that jurisdiction.
Yeah she’s not new to being a history maker…
What we love about Nitza is her fidelity to truth and ethics. When she was asked what believed was the most important quality for a judge to possess she responded,
“In exercising integrity, the judge must also be a good listener, patient, fair, impartial, courteous, reasonable, ethical, and decisive… I believe I possess these qualities.”
Nizta, you might not be a super lesbian but you are definitely something like it… as an ex pre-law student, I admire your steadfastness, your ethics and the doors you continue to open for Women of Color.
