Happy Monday love bugs. There is a lot going on in Miami this week for the L the G , the B and the T among us.
It’s one of my favorite events of the year, Winter Party and especially for the ladies, Her Winter Party.
If you remember last year we had a great time at all of the events especially Artscape and Industry. We had so much fun we almost forgot to blog about it… Oops.
This year we will definitely be attending the highlight event (in our opinion) Artscape, which showcases local lesbian (and not-so-lesbian) art work. So with that in mind we decided to overdose on some lesbian art, in the form of film. Huān yíng to Saving Face.
Plot Snapshot:
Generations collide as Wil(Wilhemina)’s 48 year old pregnant unwed mother shows up after being kicked out by Wil’s grandfather. Alone this would be a shock, but even more when considering Wil is trying to come to terms with her own love affair with ballet dancer Vivian.
Confession: this is another movie that I passed on Amazon 15 times before clicking play. This is mostly because I thought it was a foreign film and was always too lazy for a full movie of subtitles. Fine judge me. Well actually don’t judge me, because Purple Sea had subtitles and I loved it.
Moving right along…
The HBO Signature film, directed and starring Joan Chen, was extremely well produced, with believable portrayals by all the actors. Though centered around a Chinese-American family in New York, it spoke universally. I could see this set around my family, or my friends’ families as well. Yes two of the lovers were women, but this wasn’t the overdone cliche riddled type of lesbian movie that annoys the hell out of me. It was just a really good movie with lesbian characters in it.
Let the record show, I only welled up with tears once, but I laughed out loud at least 3 times.
