And the Grammy Goes to…

Hi Lovebugs,

With all of the things going on last week, from the helicopter crash death of nine people, including NBA legend Kobe Bryant to my super fun time at the Super Bowl opening night, I missed posting about the Grammys.

But I would be remiss to not give a super loud congratulations to South Beach’s own Tracy Young for being the first woman ever nominated in the Best Remixed Recording category… AND WINNING!

Stolen from her instagram. Follow her!!

Tracy is a legend with over 25 years in the game. She has done remixes with LITERALLY every one of your faves. We are talking Beyoncé, Gaga, Rihanna, Britney, Madonna and other one name superstars. She even collabed with our forever FLOTUS, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama * consider my pearls clutched *.

She is a whole mood and a boss.

Congratulations to my Sappho sister (in case you had any question whether she rode the pink rainbow)!

Well… Hmm : Transgender Athletes — Fair or Nah?

So I was having this conversation with a friend, AP, yesterday and I thought I would write a bit about it here.

I am not sure whether you have heard or not, but there is a debate surrounding high school senior, Nattaphon Wangyot, a transgender student, winning all-state honors1 in girls’ track and field. You can see the video and read more of the particulars here but you guys are smart enough to know what the question is.

Is it fair for a transgender woman to be competing with a CIS woman2  in sports?

Yeah I know I should have started blogging about something less controversial… like stem cell research or the 2016 election. Continue reading Well… Hmm : Transgender Athletes — Fair or Nah?

Congrats to Superlesbian the new Mrs. @Martina Navratilova

martina_wife2Congratulations are in order!

One of the League of Extraordinary Lesbians,  Martina Navratilova has tied the knot to her longtime girlfriend Julia Lemigova on Monday, December 15th.

“I’m 58 years old — I got married for the first time,” Navratilova told the BBC shortly after the ceremony, details of which have thus far been scarce. “It’s about time, right? Growing up as a gay woman you just don’t ever think about that.”

Warm wishes to the happy couple from us over here at the K Word. If you missed the proposal video from of Navratilova proposing1 at the US Open last September, check it out below.

What They Said: An Open Letter to Mainstream LGBT Organizations That Have Remained Silent on Black Lives Mattering

Many Americans seem to only remember one of the two namesakes of the 2009 federal hate-crime bill signed into law by President Obama: Matthew Shepard. Similarly, many Americans also seem to only remember the bill as the Matthew Shepard Act. However, this abbreviated mention conveniently leaves out the other person for whom the act is named: James Byrd Jr.

Shepard was a white, gay college student who was brutally assaulted by two homophobes near Laramie, Wyoming, and died six days following the heartrending attack. His death now haunts our collective consciousness, reminding us that hate against LGBT people might surely mean death.

James Byrd Jr., on the other hand, was a Black man from Texas. Byrd was ruthlessly murdered by three men, two of whom identified as white supremacists. His ankles were chained to the back of a pickup truck, and he was dragged approximately three miles along an asphalt road in Jasper, Texas. In the process, his head and right arm were severed from his body. His torso was eventually left in front of a cemetery that mostly contained the bodies of other Black people. Whereas Shepard was murdered because of his perceived sexual identity, Byrd was killed because he was Black.

In The News: Gay Marriage Ban in Florida Still in Effect

As a Florida born and bred lezzie, I have been asked by quite a few folks, “What is really going on with the gay marriage ban in Florida?” Normally, I would tell them to google it.  This time I was actually at a cocktail event with some of the Miami LGBT elite on the 17th (I snuck in) and got the tea from the folks’ holding the bag.
