KTravel: Souvenir Ideas… other than Shot Glasses

If you haven’t noticed, I am on a traveling kick recently. I often think of my life in terms of what trip I am planning, what trip I am on, or what trip I have just gotten back from. I am definitely not bragging as I owe it all to my amazing travel agent @dynamitetravel (a fellow Gator lezzie) and payment plans.

I have been trying to rack my brain to think of my new “adult” go-to souvenir. When I was a college student, any time I would go somewhere I would come home with a shot glass. Be it another country, another state, or even another city, I had a shot glass to commemorate the trip. It was cool, it was fun…. and it was cheap. Most of the time you can grab a $5 one while sitting in the airport. Unfortunately, over the years of moving, and partying (don’t judge me), my shot glass collection did not stand the test of time.

So then I moved on to postcards in my mid-twenties. Thanks to Martha Stewart I was on a scrapbooking kick so they were perfect. I could use them as a accent piece for a photo I shot, or cut them up to make a trip collage. I still have some postcards in my scrapbooking box that I would love to do something with. Why haven’t I? Blame Facebook and Instagram for that.

And while I am all about keychains and t-shirts as souvenir gifts, I am not really keen on them for myself. Coffee mugs are just something more for me to clean and beanie babies had their heyday in the 90s. So what are my favorite options now? I have three. KTravel: The Future of Haiti (Photojournal)

I can’t stop day dreaming about my first trip to Haiti and the amazing organization Fleur de Vie that made it happen.

Fleur de Vie is a US based non-profit organization benefiting the children of Port-Au-Prince and neighboring areas of Haiti. Each year they provide, with the help of local and US sponsors, school supplies, medical testing, and other aid to hundreds of school children.

Mama KWord and I joined them for their latest project, providing traveling library kits filled with books.

Each day we would visit one or two different schools, where we presented the kits and read stories to the children.  The looks on their faces as we interacted with them was priceless. Their fervor for education was refreshing. It was a life-changing experience that I can never repay.

I will never forget my first class with my teaching partner Marie-Ange. For me not speaking a bit of Kreyol, and un peu de French, we were a great team.

KTravel: A Fashion Lesson in Haiti (Photojournal)

During our trip to Haiti with Fleur de Vie, we had the oppurtunity to meet some amazing people. I can’t begin to tell you the awe I felt while walking through the botanical gardens with former Prime Minister, Michèle Pierre-Louis (pictures to come). Let it suffice to say, she was an amazing woman.

While having drinks in the clouds atop of one of Haiti’s highest peaks, we were joined by a charming man named Hans. For the fashionphiles among us, back in the 1960s, Hans became the first black buyer in the United States. He regaled us with his stories of Harlem riots and meetings with Malcolm X. At the close of an amazing evening, he invited us to come see his factory.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Port-au-Prince, Hans has a expansive factory that also is used to teach classes and have meetings.  As impressive as the facility was, the work of the beaders was extraordinary. Continue reading KTravel: A Fashion Lesson in Haiti (Photojournal) →

KTravel: The Taste of Haiti (Photojournal)

Where do I begin? I had an amazing experience last week traveling with Fleur de Vie to the island of Haiti. I will be posting more about the organization in a subsequent post but let me first say, this was a life-affirming visit. The work of this organization is nothing short of amazing.

I can’t wait to share my journey with you over the next few posts. The foodie in me has to start with one of the best dining experiences I have ever had abroad or in the states.
