#SupportBlackLezBiz – K Word Creations

So I have totally been slacking on blogging recently and I hope this post partially explains why. A few weeks back I started making homemade, hand stitched journals as a hobby and well… it has blown up. It has been an amazing experience so far. I went from just spotlighting black lesbian owned businesses with #SupportBlackLezBiz to becoming one.

I am not really good about tooting my own horn or “selling things” but since some of my awesome blog readers have found out about my journals, I decided to share.

I make my hand stitched blank journals using coptic stitching. Without going into the history, the perk of bindng it this way allows the book to open completely flat at any page. So they are perfect for sketching / painting as well as writing. As for the covers, I pull the pieces from lots of different sources, so let’s get creative. 1424136580941 Continue reading #SupportBlackLezBiz – K Word Creations

#SupportBlackLezBiz – AudaciouS

In light of my renewed FUBU attitude, every Monday we have decided to spotlight new black lesbian owned businesses in the new segment called #SupportBlackLezBiz.

I don’t know why we haven’t done this before… I have thought about it but never put it together. It seems so natural. We love supporting our community. We love online shopping. And we am sure at least a few of you guys do too. Now everything might not be for everyone, but we do want to showcase our sapphic sisters doing their things.  So let’s do it. 10 Things To Know About: Nastassja and Lea of Spring Up Bow Ties

As a industry 9 to 5iver, I can honestly say it is hard for me to be excited about fashion nowadays. In a world built on superficial beauty, it is easy to get caught up in the polish without any purpose. So when I was introduced to the crew at Spring Up Bow Ties, I was psyched. Any group whose vision is violence-free campus communities in which students have equal access to higher education, as well as resources that reflect and respect their experiences, I support.

KTravel: A Fashion Lesson in Haiti (Photojournal)

During our trip to Haiti with Fleur de Vie, we had the oppurtunity to meet some amazing people. I can’t begin to tell you the awe I felt while walking through the botanical gardens with former Prime Minister, Michèle Pierre-Louis (pictures to come). Let it suffice to say, she was an amazing woman.

While having drinks in the clouds atop of one of Haiti’s highest peaks, we were joined by a charming man named Hans. For the fashionphiles among us, back in the 1960s, Hans became the first black buyer in the United States. He regaled us with his stories of Harlem riots and meetings with Malcolm X. At the close of an amazing evening, he invited us to come see his factory.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Port-au-Prince, Hans has a expansive factory that also is used to teach classes and have meetings.  As impressive as the facility was, the work of the beaders was extraordinary. Continue reading KTravel: A Fashion Lesson in Haiti (Photojournal)
