Sooo… y’all still want to #FreeKate?

photoNow I am going to make this quick because I have said all I thought I would ever say about Kaitlyn Hunt in not one but two posts.

Kaitlyn Hunt is back in jail. Not because the right-wing is trying to get her. Not because America doesn’t love the gays. But because she violated a plea deal that kept her out of jail.  How did she violate this plea deal might you ask? Was she was arrested at a peaceful gay rights rally? Nope. Did she chain herself to a 100 year old oak tree? That would be a negative. It is because she (allegedly) continued to send explicit pictures and texts to the now 15 year old girl that got her sent to jail in the first place.

Oh and don’t get me started about her mother… well her mama needs her ass whooped (figuratively). No matter the conversation about Kaitlyn’s age, her mother is sho nuff an adult (my southern is about to slip in). How dare she (allegedly) send texts to the child urging her to delete the evidence that they were still in contact? If the victim’s mother was anything like Mama KWord… there would have been smoke in the city (ok I slipping further and further).

kaitlyn_huntI think we as gay people are falling into a trap that we as black people have found ourselves in in the past. In our effort to put up a united front, we are backing the wrong people. At least once a year, we are still hearing about how we marched for Tawana Brawley, and we all know we were wrong for sticking behind OJ’s murdering self too.

Wrong is wrong and if a 19 year old man OR woman was sleeping with my 14 year old child I’d send their ass straight to jail (don’t pass go, don’t collect 200 dollars) myself.

:60 Second KWord Shorts — Yes I said it… My last post on Kaitlyn Hunt

shortsSo I was speaking to a friend of mine that “didn’t agree” with my post about Kaitlyn Hunt…. until we spoke about it. From my conversation with her I feel the need to explicitly state, I am not debating the merits of the law. There can be a discussion about whether it is archaic or flawed on another post…on another blog.

I take issue with the fact that Kaitlyn, her parents, and the ACLU are trying to use her sexual orientation as the reason she should get off.

I take issue with the people saying that as a woman there is no way she could have coerced the girl, because lesbian relationships are emotional more than physical.

I take issue with the fact that dozens (at least) young black men have been prosecuted for crimes similar to this one and no one gave a damn.

I take issue with people being mad at the 14 year olds parents for turning Kaitlyn in. THEY ARE HER PARENTS AND THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED HER IN.

I take issue with people taking up the rainbow flag and wrapping it around her like she in Jesus in the manger.

And I SURE AS HELL TAKE ISSUE with people saying I don’t have the right to feel the way I do.

So yes unless we are going to overturn every statutory rape case involving high school students for the last 60 years… then her next cameo should be on Nancy Grace or Beyond Scared Straight.

My Thoughts on Inmate 54321123… (or why Kaitlyn Hunt MAY NOT be a criminal, but she is definitely not a cause)

photoI am not sure whether many had heard this story outside of Florida, but back in February, Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school student was expelled due to her relationship with a 14 year old classmate (who happened to be a girl). She was also charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a child 12 to 16 years of age as a result of the relationship.

Just so we are all straight, an 18 year old adult was in a relationship with a 14 year old child and is now in jail.

AS SHE SHOULD BE.

kaitlyn_huntNow months later people (a lot of people) are actually trying to condone her actions. Not only condone them but champion them, there are petitions signed asking her to be freed, hacker groups threatening e-anarchy, and even celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon.

As a lesbian, a feminist, and a future mother of children, that is just this side of crazy. This is not a complicated LGBT issue, on the contrary it is very simple. An 18 year old adult was in a relationship with a 14 year old child and is now in jail.

AS SHE SHOULD BE.

If the courts dared to give her a pass, how many other children would be left vulnerable as a result. If we say that this child was able to have consensual sex with an adult at 14, how do we protect other 14 year olds or 13 year olds? Where do we draw the line?

Being a woman and being a lesbian doesn’t make Kaitlyn less accountable to the law. She chose to pursue a relationship with this girl. She chose to sleep with this girl against her parents’ wishes. So now she should have a new choice to make… whether to get a honey bun or ramen noodles from the commissary.

Did I mention Kaitlyn has been offered a plea deal that would only put her on house arrest for two years, followed by a year of probation and due to our the Romeo and Juliet law she probably won’t even have to register as a sex offender?
