PSA: Create a cancer-free legacy for generations to come #CPS3 #Miami

ACS

Cancer. Even if you haven’t been diagnosed with it yourself, or haven’t had a family member diagnosed, we have been touched by this deadly disease. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I want to share something very important to me, the Cancer Prevention Study III.

The CPS-3 is set up to help doctors and researchers better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations.

In order to get the data, they need volunteers who are willing to commit to a one-time in person appointments, and followups via mail or email. THAT’S IT!

Anyone between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have no personal history of cancer is invited to join. Enrollment will be available at the following locations:

Baptist Health South Florida

The Atrium Building

1500 San Remo Avenue, Suite 400

Coral Gables, FL 33146

Tuesday, November 5, 2013, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Temple Beth Sholom

4144 Chase Avenue

Miami Beach, FL 33140

Sunday, November 10, 2013, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm

Participation is easy.

Once you schedule your appointment at http://www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/miamifl, you will receive instructions on how to complete your first, most comprehensive survey online. This survey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. Your onsite enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes and will involve: completing a short survey packet, signing a consent form, providing a waist circumference measurement, and providing a small blood sample (similar to a doctor’s visit).  Following enrollment, you will receive mailed surveys at home every 1-3 years to update your information.

Dealing with this deadly, widespread disease, research is our first line of defense. Even if you are ineligible to participate, please share with those who can. Together we can really make a difference.

#TBT – I Don’t Like Lesbians… Present Company Excluded

I know I have said before that I am definitely not hip or cool. I am not a superlesbian and actually prefer to see myself as an unfashionable femme. So I really have no business being bewildered by a conversation I recently had, and definitely not enough to write a blog about it…

But I am and I am so there humph

Let me give you a little K background before I get any “You are sensitive” eyerolls….

Growing up, there were a total of 7 black students in my elementary school, a whole hell of a lot in middle school, and a whopping 3 in my graduating class. I was always the cool black girl, without much effort. I even had a girl tell me that I was one of the only black people she knew (keyword: knew, not saw at the mall or shirked from in the elevator). Sidenote: I grew up in Miami, not Mayberry… just in case you were wondering. It was never a big thing, I just grew up with the belief that I was a universally cool cat (though using the term “cool cat” probably just lost me some points).

Did I have to check a few in my day about a pre-Imus Nappy headed hoe-ish comment? Probably.

Did I give a side eye to a “Yo, what’s up my n*word?” salutation between two melanin-free jocks from across the hall? Mmm hmm.

But one thing is for damn sure, I never in my life was told to my face “I don’t deal with black people…” followed up with a “No no K you aren’t like themmmmm”.

Fastforward to this weekend. Picture it Sicilly 1923… well actually South Beach a couple of days ago… Continue reading #TBT – I Don’t Like Lesbians… Present Company Excluded
