Why I Need to Unfollow The National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce on Facebook

Now this is one of those blog posts that I have to think about before publishing. I talk to myself about it, I question myself about it, and hopefully I click publish in the end.

I overthink posts like this because I know what I am going to discuss can be as sensitive for you the reader as myself the writer. And deep down I don’t want the amazing non black queer people I know to think that this is about them… unless it is.

sigh

With that being said I need to unfollow the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce on Facebook.

What They Said: An Open Letter to Mainstream LGBT Organizations That Have Remained Silent on Black Lives Mattering

Many Americans seem to only remember one of the two namesakes of the 2009 federal hate-crime bill signed into law by President Obama: Matthew Shepard. Similarly, many Americans also seem to only remember the bill as the Matthew Shepard Act. However, this abbreviated mention conveniently leaves out the other person for whom the act is named: James Byrd Jr.

Shepard was a white, gay college student who was brutally assaulted by two homophobes near Laramie, Wyoming, and died six days following the heartrending attack. His death now haunts our collective consciousness, reminding us that hate against LGBT people might surely mean death.

James Byrd Jr., on the other hand, was a Black man from Texas. Byrd was ruthlessly murdered by three men, two of whom identified as white supremacists. His ankles were chained to the back of a pickup truck, and he was dragged approximately three miles along an asphalt road in Jasper, Texas. In the process, his head and right arm were severed from his body. His torso was eventually left in front of a cemetery that mostly contained the bodies of other Black people. Whereas Shepard was murdered because of his perceived sexual identity, Byrd was killed because he was Black.

Black-Scape: Why Are All The Black Lesbians Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?

photo 2Happy Sunday love bugs. Sorry I haven’t written in a few days but between work, a stomach bug and the Her Winter Party festivities, I haven’t been able to log on.  But today is the day of rest and catchup.

I love this time of year.  Over the last few years I have met some of my favorite lezzies at Her Winter Party. They all have come from different backgrounds, different places, but one thing has been pretty consistent… less than 10% were lesbians of color.  It never really hit me until this year at Artscape. For those who don’t know what it is, it’s their opening event, which includes a silent art auction featuring the work of a variety of artists.

@HerWinterParty was amazing… Way too amazing to blog like we said

photo (12)See what had happened was…

Yes it is true, anytime a black lesbian woman person says “See what had happened was” an excuse/lie is not too far away.

As my inability to go three seconds without a yawn should tell you, Her Winter Party, the women’s events of the Winter Party Festival was the best lezzie time I have had in a longgggg time.

And yes I have to make that distinction even though this might have edged out Art Basel in my heart.

In the next few posts we will be sharing some of the event highlights, but there were some personal standout moments to me that I want to kick off the posts with:

* Being commended by Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and ACTUAL superlesbian, for the increased attendance and diversity of lesbians this year.

* Getting to chat with the lovely guys of the Paul and Matty show about Her Winter Party, giving voice to the lesbian community and how important safe sex is to us as well as the boys.  I can’t wait to share a clip with you guys. (That’s if they leave me in the final audio ha!)

*Partying up poolside with my friends (old and new), my Mrs.,  and the lovely and TALL Jessica Clark  (and yes this link goes directly to her calendar — Yes ma’am).

I am sure I will say this again but I am very very very very very proud to have worked with such an amazing group of people and I can’t wait until we PARTY WITH A PURPOSE again next year! Even though my swollen feet, the Mrs.’ concussion (don’t ask) and my aversion to paying 25.00 a night to park a car I didn’t drive might disagree.

Shoutouts to Lisa, Marivi, Ingrid, Cliffie, Kathy, Yesi of Pandora Events, Lynn of Icandee Events, Amy, Crystal, Znario, Mayren and…  EVERY LOVELY LADY THAT I MET THIS WEEKEND!

Trust me there are more posts..videos…and photos to come (for real this time).

All @HerWinterParty…. All the Time — Let’s Go!

Oh snap! (Yes we brought that back) it’s time for Her Winter Party! We are so excited to be a marketing and media partner with the event and now we are ready to GET IT IN!

Check back here daily as we will be live** blogging and posting pictures from the event all weekend.

(KK will also be tweeting up a storm at @kristiweb, so follow her if you don’t already!

For those who don’t know what Winter Party Festival is about. We snatched this from their website:

For 19 years Winter Party Festival has been making a difference in people’s lives and providing vital funding to organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force donates the majority of the net proceeds of Winter Party Festival and the Miami Recognition Dinner to local nonprofit organizations. Since assuming responsibility for these events in 2005, the Task Force has donated nearly $1.2 million dollars to the GLBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation.

How cool is that? You know we are always down to party for a purpose.

South Florida lezzies who still want more details, check out the line up HERE.

**See how we cleaned up that live blogging lie (Blame it on the aaaaaalcohol).
