Like most series on this blog, I haven’t written a KRead review in a while. But seeing that today is National Book Day, I decided to get back on the proverbial horse.

This is actually the second book I will be reviewing by Anondra “Kat” Williams. Way back when I read her first offering black girl love. For those who haven’t read it, it is an extremely sensual experience… hmm… that I might have to relive.

Fast forward five years to her newest work, Pat Greene: Her Story. I must admit, this book has been languishing in my Amazon Kindle queue for a while, but I am very happy I finally read it.

Plot Snapshot: The coming of age story of Pat Greene, a black lesbian everywoman, filled with love, loss and a little lust.

Something Like A Super Lesbian: Stormé DeLarverie (In Memoriam)

storme-delaverie2Stormé DeLarverie, a longtime member of the Stonewall Veteran’s Association, epic drag king performer and pioneer LGBT activist, has died at age 93.

After living in a Brooklyn nursing home since 2010, she passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, May 24th, 2014.

Stormé is  best known for being part of the legendary Jewel Box Revue, a popular drag performance group created in 1939. For two decades in the 1940s and 1950s, Stormé performed as their only male impersonator. 

DeLarverie made her indelible mark on LGBT history during a faithful night, June 27, 1969, while hanging out in Greenwich Village. Though, almost 50 years later, the events have been called the Stonewall riots, DeLarverie was very clear that that wasn’t the case.

“It was a rebellion, it was an uprising, it was a civil rights disobedience — it wasn’t no damn riot”.

Lynne Browne is believed to be first openly-gay cabinet minister in Africa. She will serve as Minister of Public Enterprises.

The significance of her appointment is innumerable, especially against the backdrop of an extremely homophobic continent.

Lynne BrownEusebius McKaiser, a broadcaster and political author, remarked that though she isn’t a gay activist, there is still a clear impact:

“Insofar as the social impact of openly gay people in high-profile public leadership positions cannot be discounted in a country like South Africa where levels of homophobia, including violence against black lesbian women, remain rife.”

Something Like A Super Lesbian: Vernita Gray (In Memoriam)

CT met-Vernita-Gray-gay-marriage-01.JPGVernita Gray, a Chicago icon and the gay rights activist who wed her partner in Illinois’ first same-sex marriage, has died at age 65.

nadine_headshotI have noticed that this black history month particularly, and with this Something Like a Super Lesbian series in general, I have been highlighting people that are dead.

I didn’t really meannnn to, but there is just something about monochromatic pictures of lesbians of  yesteryear.

I am going to switch it up right now.
